FAQs

Teams

Q:  Who is eligible to participate in the competition

A:  The Competition is open only to students who are

•    enrolled full time in a graduate program;
•    are legal residents of the fifty (50) United States and the District of Columbia;
•    and are age 18 or older (if the age of majority in their jurisdiction is different than 18, they must be at least 18 and of the age of majority in their jurisdiction).

Current and former principals or employees of Deloitte Consulting, other than summer associates, are not eligible to participate in the Competition, nor are students at Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management who are participating in the planning of the Competition (the “2010 Owen Case Competition Leadership Team”).  Participants in prior National MBA Human Capital Case Competitions, who were second year students at that time, will not be eligible to compete in the Competition.

Q:  Are international students permitted to participate in the competition?

A:  Yes, provided they meet the criteria stated in the “who is eligible to participate in the competition” question above.

Q:  What are the team composition requirements for the competition?

•    Each team must consist of exactly six total graduate students, comprised of two or three second year graduate students (“2nd Years”) and three or four first year graduate students (“1st Years”) from the same university.  An individual may not participate in the Competition on more than one team.
•    At least three team members must be enrolled full-time in a masters of business administration (“MBA”) program.  All other team members must be enrolled full-time in another graduate program.
•    1st Years who participate in the Competition will be eligible to compete in future National MBA Human Capital Case Competitions.  2nd Years who participate in the Competition will not be eligible to compete in future competitions.
•    The team members must select one 2nd Year to be the team captain.
•    Once a team has become a Selected Team, any replacement personnel for a Selected Team must submit an application in accordance with the above process in order to be included in the Competition on such Selected Team.  Notwithstanding the foregoing, a Selected Team may be disqualified at the Sponsor’s discretion if all six members of such Selected Team are not present for either or both presentations.

Q: Can multiple teams from my school apply?

A: Yes.  There is no limit on the number of teams that can apply from one school.  Each application will be judged on its own merit.  Keep in mind, however, that a student may only apply on one application.  A student cannot apply on multiple applications.

Q: I want to participate, but need some time and/or help to round out a team from my school.  What should I do?

A: That's great to hear!  Please let us know of your interest here and we will work with you to help put together a team.  Please note that  teams must be composed of three (3) second-year members and three (3) first-year members.

Q: One of our teammates will no longer be able to participate.  May we make a substitution?

A: Teams were selected after review of individual and collective qualifications, and thus we discourage substitutions.  However, if a substitution cannot be avoided, each team is allowed to request up to two substitutions (one 1st year and one 2nd year).  If you would like to request a substitution, please send an email to Emily.Seekins.2011@owen.vanderbilt.edu with the following information:

  • Name of the person requesting to drop out of the team
  • Resume and the following application information for the person applying to join the team:
    o   Name
    o   Email
    o   Phone
    o   Concentration/Major/Emphasis
    o   Years of Work Experience
    o   2010 Summer Internship
    o   Club Involvement and Positions Held
    o   Statement regarding interest in consulting
    o   Statement regarding reason for entering competition

The HCCC leadership team will review the application and will notify the team if the applicant is accepted to join the team. You will be notified within five business days of your submission regarding the results of your substitution application.

Q: Can non-traditional MBAs apply?

A: Unfortunately, Executive MBA programs are not considered "full-time" MBA programs by the National MBA Human Capital Case Competition, and thus, cannot participate in the competition. For other questions on team make-up, please contact Emily Seekins, at Emily.Seekins.2011@owen.vanderbilt.edu.
